Brock - 13 Months, Overview

It's hard to believe that our little Brock-man is already 13 months old!  We are still reeling from hitting the one year mark, can't believe we have already surpassed it.  During his first year, I chronicled everything he did through a written journal.  While I loved it, I hated not being able to add pictures and video to it. Thus, the reason for this blog.  So glad to be able to keep track of all that he is doing and share it with family and friends!

13 Months at a glance...

Brock loves avocado!
Food - this month we made the complete switch from purees to all finger foods.  I picked up the book Baby-Led Weaning and have used many of it's principals in how I feed Brock.

We are amazed at how wonderfully Brock is doing with eating!  I was a picky eater up until yesterday a few years ago and I am bound and determined for my children to not go down that path.  I have worked really hard when it comes to his eating and it has required a lot of patience and commitment.  Brock has been eating a variety of fruits and veggies since he began solids at 5 months, but here are a few new things we've added in since he turned one.

Cheerios - used to do Puffs, but now have switched
Raisins
Chicken
Turkey
Strawberries
Avocado
Black Beans
Edamame - he gobbles them up!
Ham
Pineapple

We began Brock on whole milk after his one year appointment, but unfortunately he had some trouble with it.  The doctor has us on soy milk for now.  So far, it has been going great and we have a happy baby once again!

Movement - Brock is on the move!

Over the past month, Brock has gone from scooting to crawling.  Crawling has not come easily for him,  which I've heard is true of many babies.  He has had trouble getting his knees bent into position.  Thanks to my dear friend, Nicki, who's a professional occupational therapist, she has been helping us train Brock's body how to crawl.  It is still a work in progress, but he is right on the cusp of having the crawl down pat!

Aside from that, we are knee deep in the "cruising" phase.  Brock loves to stand up and move from toy to toy, couch to table, and especially Mommy to Daddy.  He love to hold our hands and walk places, and he is just about able to stand up on his own without falling.  He continues to work on being able to sit up from laying down and pulling up without help.  He is quite a hard worker :)

Brock has never been one to jump right into things head first, he has always preferred to take his time and do things at his own pace.  Like his mama, once he figures something out, he can take off with it.  Britt and I had always heard that once children start rolling over and sitting - "its on" - and it hasn't quite been that way for us.  I think we both expected things to move quicker than they have in the movement department.  We are not disappointed at all in how it is playing out, but definitely have a new mindset on the whole process.

Words - this kid love to talk!  His favorite words are DaDa and ball (also his favorite toy).  He also loves to say MaMa, NaNa, and Uh-oh.  He also knows the sounds that many animals make, particularly: duck, lion, monkey, and rooster.

Hardest part this month: hates the changing table again. Ugh.

Favorite of this month: watching how excited he gets when his daddy comes home from work!

Goat Rescue at the Y

I will never look at those screaming goat videos in the same way again!  If you haven't seen any of the latest YouTube videos of music videos with goat interludes...well, you're not really missing a whole lot.  But they are everywhere!  I have seen several versions all the way from Taylor Swift to old ladies working out.  For some reason screaming goats are the latest funny.

On Monday evening, Britt and I met up to walk the greenway at the Y.  After putting Brock in the nursery, we headed out to walk.  The greenway backs up to several homes, some of which are little farms.  As we're passing one farm in particular, we can hear the sound of a goat screaming - like we've heard on so many videos.  Definitely a funny noise (and we totally laughed), but we decided to take a closer look.  Turns out the goat was screaming for a reason!  It was a baby goat that had gotten his head stuck in the fence.

We decided we had to do something.  The owners weren't home, neither were their neighbors.  We couldn't just leave him like that, so we worked for 30 minutes trying to get him free.  We tried everything from trying to entice him to move back, manipulating the fence, and trying to just push his head back.  Nothing worked.  Finally, Britt took my extra shirt, wrapped it around his snout and used all of his strength to push him back, while I worked to get his horns to fit back through.  It worked!

We weren't sure how long he'd been stuck that way, but the mama goat was visible nursing him and possibly others.  That was the main reason that we felt we had to get him free, we knew he must be hungry.  As soon a we got him back through, he went straight to his mother and began to nurse.  Whew, that definitely made us feel good.

It's definitely a funny story, but I was really surprised and proud of Britt for taking such a interest in getting the goat out of the fence.  He was determined to get him out and he finally did.  Never a dull moment :)

PS: the picture above is NOT the goat we helped, but a goat at the petting zoo that had a keen interest in Brock.  That picture still cracks us up!

Spring is here!

This weekend was the first real weekend of Spring - and we got to spend it doing some of our favorite activities.  Saturday morning, I made a pit stop by a few community yard sales.  The hubs coached two flag football games at the park (both of which they won!).  Brock loves watching his daddy coach football.

After the games, we walked over to the Nolensville Buttercup Festival where we had BBQ and ran into several friends.  Made a quick visit into my favorite antiques store Three French Hens for a new can of chalk paint.   Then home for naps all around.

Sunday, I had a ladies outing with friends for a pedicure, while Britt enjoyed a long day of golf with some three of his good friends.

To wrap the weekend up, Britt and I have made the decision to cut dairy out of our diets for the next 30 days (and possibly beyond).  We've wrestled back and forth with this for some time now and finally decided it would be a good thing for us to try.  But, since we both love dairy so much, we decided to take Sunday as our last day to enjoy some of our favorite dairy items before cutting them all out completely.  Britt had a big juicy cheeseburger, while I went for a round of cheese dip.  Then we topped it off with a few bites of ice cream cake.  It felt like our own little "Fat Tuesday"...or really "Fat Sunday".
